Hundreds of people, mostly young supporters, flooded the streets of Douala, Cameroon’s economic capital, in what quickly became one of the largest political mobilizations in recent years. Marchers moved through key thoroughfares chanting for “truth and justice,” urging the electoral commission to “acknowledge the people’s choice.”
According to local reports, protests soon spread through several neighborhoods in Douala, including the densely populated New Bell area. Witnesses said security forces used live ammunition to disperse the crowds, leaving at least two people shot and several others hospitalized, some in critical condition.
As images of the clashes circulated on social media, demonstrations broke out in other major cities, including Garoua, Maroua, Meinganga, Kaélé, and Bertoua. Many described the wave of unrest as a nationwide movement for electoral transparency and accountability.
Observers warned that tensions remain high as the electoral commission prepares to announce the official results. Supporters of Issa Tchiroma Bakary have appealed for calm but insist that their calls for transparency and justice must be respected.
The coming days could prove decisive for Cameroon’s political future, as both citizens and observers await the official election results amid growing concerns over state repression and public unrest.
